  Foundations 101

If you are familiar with construction, then you know how important a good foundation is for your project. When it comes to Pioneer Steel Buildings, there are a few foundation options to consider, depending on your intended use, geographical location, and terrain specifics.

Choosing Your Location

Foundations should be installed on level ground that is free of obstructions, regardless of the type of foundation you choose for your steel building. Your metal structure will sit on some form of concrete, which is porous, so you will want to select an area of your property that has good drainage.

Conversely, you can create drainage in an area by laying gravel and stone chips down and tamping them before installing your foundation or installing a French drain or weeping tile system to move water away from the area. Baseplate and post (or pier) construction is a great foundation solution when you need to maintain drainage

Choosing Your Foundation

If you are unsure of the type of foundation you should use, our dealers have a lot of experience figuring out the best option for your needs, and consulting about this important part of your steel building is part of their job.

The type of foundation you chose also depends on the permanence of your metal building. For example, if you are going to be disassembling your building and moving it to a different site, then you will want to choose a foundation onto which you bolt a baseplate, leaving your sidewalls free for removal.

On the other hand, if you do not intend to move your metal structure, or you plan on living in your steel building, a more permanent solution is needed, like a raised concrete foundation, which uses concrete to raise the sidewall for more height, or a concrete trough where the side panels are grouted into the foundation with cement.
